Admission, qualifying exams, external dissertations
- Application documentation is always handed in to the Doctoral Administration of the Academic Services The Prorector for Doctoral Studies evaluates the application.

If the Prorector recommends imposing qualifying exams, the supervising professors should recommend which courses and exams are to be taken by the applicants and the Doctoral Committee of the department ("Doktoratsausschuss") must give its formal approval.
- If the doctoral work is conducted outside ETH Zurich at an external institution, the Doctoral Committee of the department has to give formal approval.
