MBA in Supply Chain Management

From 2003 until 2019, the MBA programme in Supply Chain Management trained experienced professionals and executives to become business leaders at senior management levels.

Co-founder Professor Paul Schönsleben shaped the programme for the first five years of its existence, and in 2008 Professor Stephan Wagner took over as Academic Director. The title “MBA ETH SCM” certifies our successful graduates’ expertise in general management, global economy and organisations, and supply chain management.

Fifteen cohorts of about 20 to 25 students were educated in exclusive classes by a faculty consisting of renowned experts from ETH, other universities, and the private sector. During the two-year programme, students earned a total of 60 credit points in four key facets:

  1. General Management
  2. Supply Chain Management
  3. Global Economy with study trips
  4. Master’s thesis

The first two programme components provided students with a sound basis in advanced theory and in-depth knowledge about state-of-the-art industry practice. In the third part, Global Economy, participants were able to make use of their new competencies during study trips to Russia, China, Japan and the USA. The concluding Master’s thesis allowed graduates to bring together all they had learned and apply it to a real case-study in collaboration with a company. Supported by partners from the private sector, the MBA ETH SCM programme retained a strong connection to major firms in and beyond the field of supply chain management.

We have supported ETH in setting up this MBA programme because we realised that supply chain management has become a profession, one that needs highly qualified business leaders to manage the global challenges.Dr Stefan Nöken, Member of the Executive Board, Hilti Corporation

Throughout the MBA ETH SCM, students were encouraged and provided with the opportunities to form a network of contacts among one another, but also with external executives. An Industry Executive Advisory Board not only ensured a tight link between programme contents and industry needs, but also actively engaged in the MBA programme by giving presentations on a regular basis. These VIP talks featured, among others, Janwillem Acket, Chief Economist, Julius Bär; Peter Ernsting, SVP Group Supply Chain and Member of the Executive Committee, Carlsberg Group; Dr. Barbara Frei-Spreiter, Group Senior Vice President, ABB; Monika Ribar, CEO, Panalpina; and Paul Zumbühl, CEO Interroll Worldwide Group (positions at time of presentations).
