Course accreditation

This section gives you an overview of how your course credits are recorded.

You must earn a minimum of 18 ECTS credits in your regular doctoral studies at D-MTEC. Of these, at least 4 ECTS credits must be earned at ETH Zurich.

To earn credits, you must either pass performance assessments or receive verification of your active contribution. In each of the following categories you must at least earn 1 ECTS credit, not necessarily at ETH Zurich:

  1. Consolidation of knowledge in the area of research of your doctoral thesis and extension of knowledge beyond your original discipline: You can earn these credits by attending e.g. Master’s degree courses, courses from the third year of a Bachelor’s degree programme or courses especially designed for doctoral candidates.
  2. Acquisition of transferable skills: You can earn these credits by attending courses for transferable skills or participating in ETH Zurich committees or other bodies. You must acquire at least 1 ECTS credit in this category by attending a course on the topic of ethics and good scientific practice. ETH Zurich offers corresponding courses in ethics and good scientific practice, but you can earn this credit also at other institutions.
  3. Integration into the academic community: You can earn credits by attending international conferences.

Credits earned before commencing your doctoral studies and credits from language courses will not be recognised.

To enrol for each semester and to register for courses use myStudies.

Learning Agreement

You should discuss your study plan with your doctoral thesis supervisor. At D-MTEC, you are required to stipulate the courses in a Learning Agreement via myStudies. The Learning Agreement has to be completed at the end of your doctorate.

Recording credits

Courses at ETH Zurich and UZH

Credits earned in lectures listed in the ETH course catalogue automatically show up in myStudies, provided you pass the performance assessment.

In order to attend courses and take assessments at the University of Zurich (UZH), external pagecourse registration at the University of Zurich is compulsory (“studies at more than one university”). Performance assessments from UZH courses are transferred automatically to your ETH records. Paper confirmations of UZH courses are not accepted and UZH courses are not credited retrospectively.

Other courses

You need to manually record courses and performance assessments that take place outside of ETH and UZH (or are not booked online) via myStudies.

Attention

Depending on when you have been provisionally and definitely admitted to your doctorate, courses may be accredited in a different way explained here. This applies to you:

  • if you have been definitely admitted before 1 January 2022, or
  • if you have been provisionally, but not definitely admitted before 1 January 2022 and decide for it according to the transitional provisions of the Ordinance on the Doctorate.
