Legacy Course Accreditation

The following information is only relevant to doctoral candidates who are completing their doctoral studies under the previous regulation either if they have been definitely admitted before 1 January 2022, of if they have decided so after being provisionally but not definitely admitted before 1 January 2022.

To all doctoral candidates who are admitted provisionally on 1 January 2022 or later course accredition is explained here.

Credit points (CPs) are awarded for doctoral studies. One CP corresponds to a workload of 25–30 hours. CPs are only awarded for performance that is verifiably the student’s own work.

CPs earned in courses not listed in the ETH and UZH course catalogues and not booked elctronically will not be entered into the system and will therefore not be visible in myStudies.

ETH Zurich does not issue transcripts in connection with its doctorate, as there are no formal course requirements. Research can begin without further conditions after completion of a Master’s degree.

D-MTEC doctoral candidates have to earn at least 18 CPs. In certain cases, the supervisor can reduce the required minimum number to 12 CPs. At least 4 CPs have to be earned outside of the doctoral candidate’s field of research. Furthermore, doctoral candidates are expected to earn at least 4 CPs at ETH. No CPs will be awarded for language courses or conferences.

In general, D-MTEC doctoral candidates plan their studies together with their supervising professor. Courses can be attended at or outside of ETH. However, all courses have to be at the Master’s or doctoral level.

Doctoral Studies in Management or Doctoral Studies in Economics are of specific interest to D-MTEC doctoral candidates. These courses enable doctoral candidates to deepen their knowledge in the field of their doctoral thesis project.

Registration at myStudies is required for ETH courses. The required CPs of performance assessments are listed in myStudies as well. Only CPs visible on the transcript of records in myStudies are accepted.

external pageOnline registration is required for courses at the University of Zurich. After CPs have been awarded, they will be listed in myStudies under “Performance Assessments without Category” and will be counted to the required 18 ECTS.

CPs acquired through courses offered outside of the ETH and UZH course catalogues will not be entered into the system and will therefore not be visible in myStudies. Relevant documented proof must be provided for these CPs, and doctoral candidates need the approval of their supervisor and – in the case of Non-Swiss institutions – the doctoral committee.

Depending on the location of the courses, different documents (in English) have to be handed in by e-mail to the D-MTEC Doctoral Administration:

CPs from other Swiss institutions:

  • confirmation from the supervisor that the CP's may be credited to the doctoral studies (e-mail)
  • confirmation/certificate of the CPs that have been earned (scanned copy)

CPs from institutions abroad:

  • request of the supervisor for the assignment of the CPs (by letter or email)
  • information about the attended course, summer school, winter school, etc. regarding workload, ECTS etc. (scanned copy)
  •  signed confirmation of the CPs that have been earned (scanned copy)

The D-MTEC Doctoral Administration will forward the request to the Doctoral Committee for approval.

CPs earned in courses not listed in the ETH and UZH course catalogues will not be entered into the system and will therefore not be visible in myStudies.

CPs have to be confirmed by the D-MTEC Doctoral Administration before you register for the doctoral examination. Please request this confirmation at least six months before the doctoral examination takes place.
